Holy Spirit Catholic Church "A Warm and Welcoming Religious Experience"
Ministry Guide Altar Servers: Both boys and girls serve as altar servers at Holy Spirit Catholic Church. We were the first church in the Archdiocese of New Orleans to use girls as altar servers. Bereavement Ministry: We send cards from the parish to the families of those who are deceased. Both Father Roy and Deacon Tom are available for grief counseling and spiritual support. Coordinator: Ray Lorio Phone: 394-1782
Collection Counters: Every Monday a group of volunteers meets to assist in counting the Mass collections and getting the deposit ready for the bank. Coordinator: Ms. Joan Brennan Phone: 394-5492
Esprit: Esprit is dedicated to strengthen our parish by developing a greater sense of community among members aged 50-plus through a variety of social, spiritual, educational, cultural and recreational activities. They strive in all their activities to reflect the teaching of Christ and they reach out in their programs to other parishioners and the broader community. Eucharistic Ministers: At the Last Supper Christ instituted the Paschal Sacrifice and banquet by which the Sacrifice of the Cross is continuously made present in the Church. Family Dinner Group: Every second Tuesday of the month a group of dedicated volunteers sets up the Parish Life Center to accommodate several hundred families. They prepare and serve a family dinner open to all members of the community. After dinner they clean up the center for the next day's activity. Coordinator: Charlene Vernotzy Phone: 394-5949
Hospitality/Greeters: At Holy Spirit we take pride in providing "a warm and welcoming religious experience" for all those who come to worship and serve with us. Every member of the community tries to make it his/her responsibility to assist in greeting people and volunteers work at each Mass to welcome visitors, select gift bearers, and assist the handicapped. Music Ministry: The choir at Holy Spirit seeks with music to open the celebration, intensify the unity of those who have assembled, lead their thoughts to the mystery of the liturgical season or festivity, and enhance their worship. Music Director: Ms. Pam Kamphuis Phone: 394-5492
Pastoral Council Members of the Pastoral Council contribute their experience and assume responsibility in the direction of the parish and its organizations, in the investigation of the conditions in which the Church's pastoral work is to be carried on, and in the elaboration and execution of a plan of action for the parish. People Program: The People Program at Holy Spirit is a satellite of the People Program founded by the Sisters of St. Joseph at their Provincial House on Mirabeau Avenue in 1974. It is designed to promote and provide interesting programs that enrich the lives and enhance the creativity of members who are over 50 years old. The program offers a wide variety of courses to share knowledge, crafts, and arts. Through participation in the course work as teachers and students, the participants draw on one another’s skills as they provide mental and emotional stimulation, physical strength, and, above all, a new feeling of belonging and self confidence. Courses are offered from 9:00 a.m. till 3:00 p.m. on Wednesdays and Thursdays in the Parish Life Center. RCIA The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA) is designed for adults who are consciously and freely seeking the living God and conversion to the Catholic faith. Team members and sponsors assist those seeking instruction in the faith on Monday nights from 7:00 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. from September to May of the following year. Religious Education: Holy Spirit offers religious education, faith formation, spiritual indoctrination, and catechesis for children on Tuesday evening from 4:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. in CCD classes for students in kindergarten through junior high school. In addition, we provide Sunday School at the 9:00 a.m. Mass for children from pre-K to the 3rd grade. Algiers: United Churches of Algiers provides emergency food, clothing, and financial assistance for prescription drugs, utility bills, and transportation for the needy. President: Yvonne Carnes Phone: 393-7943
Welcome Coffee: After each Mass on the second Sunday of each month the parishioners gather together in the Parish Life Center to welcome new members to our community over coffee and donuts. Coordinator: Phyllis Robert Phone: 394-0750
Woodlawn Rest Home A group of parishioners brings communion and company to the residents of the Woodland Village Rest Home. This ministry includes the giving of small personal gifts of toiletries at Christmas time. Coordinator: Ms. Meg Boogaerts Phone: 394-1234 Phone: 394-0750
